COMHAR serves infants to young adults with programs that help them to maximize their potential and enjoy a happier healthier life within their families. Highly trained and caring staff provide a range of services targeting each child's specific needs and encouraging the family's active involvement. Bilingual, bicultural therapists and special instructors make these services accessible to Latino families who communicate more comfortably in Spanish.
COMHAR offers outpatient counseling for young people ages five to eighteen who experience behavioral and emotional problems at home or in school. Services include therapy for children and families, referral for psychological or psychiatric evaluation if indicated, and assistance in obtaining other community supports. For information about an intake appointment call 215-427-5800.
The Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Services program works with youngsters ages five to twenty-one who have serious emotional and mental health problems. Children receive intensive services at home or in school to help them reduce or replace problem behaviors with more positive, socially appropriate behaviors. Following an initial assessment, case managers involve both the child and the family in planning for services that may include psychological testing, psychiatric evaluation, mobile or behavioral therapy and therapeutic staff support (TSS).
COMHAR's Early Intervention Program provides an array of home and site-based services for young children from birth to age five, who show delays in their physical, emotional, cognitive, or social development. Early intervention is crucial in helping these children to achieve their developmental goals and to continue a pattern of healthy growth. Active involvement by parents or caretakers is equally important to the program's success. A multidisciplinary evaluation identifies the child's need for services that may include special instruction; physical, occupational or speech therapy; behavior therapy; and nursing and nutrition consultations. EIP instructors coach parents in their home environment to interact with their child through play activities that foster the youngster's individuality and self-confidence and build developmental skills. Staff and specialists work toward a trusting partnership with families that allows each child to blossom. Families seeking services for children under three years old must contact ChildLink at 215-731-2110. They will help arrange for an initial screening and then work with the family to obtain services to meet their child's specific needs. Referral for services for children from three to five years old is through Elwyn's SEEDS Philadelphia program. For intake information call 215-222-8054. COMHAR's EI Program is one of the city-wide programs they may be referred to.
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) is an umbrella term describing the range of effects that can occur in an individual whose mother drank alcohol during pregnancy. These effects include physical, mental, behavioral, and/or learning disabilities with possible lifelong implications. All FASDs are 100% preventable—if a woman does not drink alcohol while she is pregnant. The Philadelphia FASD Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Initiative goals are to improve the functioning and quality of life of children and their families. The project includes screening, assessing, diagnosing a child with an FASD, and providing needed interventions, treatment, and supports. The target age is birth through 7years of age children who are receiving services within COMHAR's system of care. (***Cited from http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/fas/fasask.htm***)
Families can access children's outpatient and EPSDT wraparound services and HSDF by directly contacting COMHAR or by referral from a teacher, doctor or other professional provider. Children must receive referrals to COMHAR's Early Intervention Program.
